Jo\u00e3o de Castro. In Farsi (Persian) \u201cportegal\u201d is orange and in Arabic it is \u201cbortugal\u201d or \u201cburtuq\u00e1lum\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the Algarve, during the 18th century, Christmas trees were decorated with oranges. Production has been increasing every year, not only due to the growth in the cultivated area, but also to the sector\u2019s average productivity.<\/p>\n<p>Oranges are Portugal\u2019s third most exported fruit (2019), and the main destination is the European market: it accounts for 90% of international sales.
